1. How does Clinical Reader work?
We import all the recent articles from high impact and popular journals under speciality sections and display the headlines of the ten most recent articles. There are separate sections for news, journals and multimedia.
Hover your cursor over a headline and see part of an article displayed, to read the full content just click on the article to be connected to the article in a new window. Be aware that some websites offer content that may be password protected, requiring membership or subscription in order to login to the site.
We recommend logging into Athens (see top right hand corner) before browsing as this wll enable academic and institutional access to full articles to a vast majority of the top journals. To learn more about Eduserv Athens click here.
2. How often do you update your feeds?
Every thirty minutes.
3. How do you decide which sites are in a section?
The top journals are those determined using the ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Reports® from Thomson Reuters. The Journal Citation Reports® offer a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals, with quantifiable, statistical information based on citation data on a bienuual cycle.
We also rely on several sources - results of Journal Performance Indicators, google scholar, award wining websites and suggestions from medical blogs, researchers, our editorial board plus the recommendations of our user community. Our content is constantly adapting as we locate the top web sources to keep you abreast of current trends.
4. How do you decide on the order?
We use a journals impact factor, essentially an approximation of the prestige of a journal in which individuals have published integrating peer review, productivity, and subject specialty citation rates. For example, the General Medicine section displays the New England Journal of Medicine at the top, it is after all the highest impact factor medical journal.
In addition to impact factor and popularity some sites are relatively unknown but provide high-quality information. We like to see articles featured from students to professors and small and big players in the medical industry.
Remember that Clinical Reader is not entirely based on computer algorithms.
5. I can´t see the entire article once I click through?
Clinical Reader respects all copyrights and legal restrictions on content and access. Clinical Reader cannot give a user access to articles to which the user does not already have access to copyright-restricted content. For example, if a user does not have access to a research article in the BMJ (either through an individual subscription or through the user´s institution), Clinical Reader will not be able to show the item in full.
We highly recommend obtaining access via Athens to access an extensive collction of medical journals. Many academic institutions and health departments are already signed up, to find out if this includes yours click here for more information or consult your institutions librarian. Of course all this doesn´t apply to open access journals or specific articles.
6. How does Clinical Reader find news?
Clinical Reader finds news in three ways:
o We consume hundreds of RSS feeds from leading journals, news sites and blogs.
o Our custom-built news spider travels the web indexing new research articles and news it finds.
o Once found we use a combination of Bayesian, instance-based learning, natural language and semantic processing, key word tagging and Boolean filtering.
